Growth and Development

Post by Hawthorne » Mon May 24, 2010 10:55 pm

We had this thread in one of the last forums -- we used to record age, height, and weight of our developing Tamaskans.

Freyja is just about done growing. She almost 16 months old and weighs 65 pounds (29.4 kilos).
I think she's about 23 inches (58.42 cm) tall -- I'll have to redo that measurement...

Good thinking! I have to measure / weigh Jasper and Vixen again soon... Vixen's weight has been totally up and down lately (pregnancy then lactation) so I might just wait until after the pups are gone for her to return to normal and then weigh her... otherwise I think we'll get some strange results! Since Jasper was castrated he's gained 2 kilos... so I think it did him good. He's not quite so skinny anymore!

For those who are interested, here is the Puppy Weight Chart (Microsoft Excel Worksheet) for the Firefox Litter's first 4 weeks! :P

Loo reached her full height by about 16 months...about 27-28 inches, depending on if she stays still enough for me to measure :o She's an amazon...all legs...She weighs in at about 70 lbs, a good weight for her....She'll be two next week...

I just recently had Ulric measured. He weighs 22.5 kg, he stands at 55.88 cm at his withers, and from nose to tip of his tail is 152.4 cm.

I took Wave today to the Vet for his necessary shots/wellness visit :)

Wave was very good but did not like the scale to be weighed. They no longer do this in front of the owners? I am a lil' confused by this? The entire office was excited 2 see him & all wanted to know his weight  Too funny...my boy is a lil' celebrity in our vets office, he knows how to impress the ladies

Anyhow, weight is estimated to be 93lbs...........he has lost a little bit of weight with the hotter heat. The vet said that was normal in these parts of the state this time of year. He was not concerned.

His height has reached 30". We got a lot of "my goodness, look how tall he is" today.

He must be huge! I think Ayasca was around 66lbs the last time he was weighed (quite a while ago) and he's a reasonable size. Unfortunately Mischa is smaller and weighs much the same as she's a bit of a chub. We are cutting her meals down a bit now.

Nice that he's so popular at the vets :)

He is an eye catcher, first by his looks, than by his size.

It was funny when they gave me the numbers I said "are you sure....." and they said dont worry he'll gain more weight he's still growing..........

They misunderstood, I am like HOLY COW he is huge no more growth is fine with me!

My vet has been predicting that he will settle in at 100lbs as an adult? We shall see.........

I understand that a dog's "ideal" weight usually can be seen at 12 months of age, so, yeah, prob a little bigger ;)

By 12-18 months they will have reached their full adult height... BUT, for males especially, they remain lanky until around 2-3 years old. By the time a male is 5-6 years old, he will have finally reached his full adult weight. So there is quite a lot of weight gain between the age of 1 year and 5 years as they develop and mature. Jasper is still quite skinny but also very tall... he just looks like a small dog because there isn't much "meat" on him... give him a couple of years and when he fills out I think he'll look much bigger overall, even though the height won't change. ;)

Wave pretty much was equal to his weight/months until the 8 month range. At 4 months he was in the 40lb range, 5 months 50 lb range....at 8 months he was in the 80lb range. Thank goodness that trend stopped

I have reveiwed many posts with listed weights and ages. What will the health male and female Tamaskan weight between..............2-8 yrs of age?

Is it better to keep them slightly under....... say 5-10 lbs. of the ideal weight? I have read for some large breed dogs that slightly lower than the breed average is better for the heart and hips.

Has anyone kept a spread sheet of weights during pregnancy?..........( of the dogs :) )

Ideal weight is different for each dog like in humans. Ideally the dog should not show too much ribs. A nice covering but not looking thin. Viewed from above should just have a slight waist. I never weigh food and just adjust to how the dog is looking at the time.

Konah weight is 30 kg at 14 months old. She is still very lean so I think her final weight will be more. She is about 68 cm in height so also a tall girl. I was hoping that by now she would gain some more mass because she is just skinny.
Some people actually ask me if I'm feeding her enough

Tsonata has a big butt too  This morning we now know why. He hunts and eats, high fat Chipmonks   We watched just an hour ago, his stalking what we thought was a bug or Tyranasuarus stick :) When I'll be damned but he came crashing out of the creek bed with a chipmonk and a mouth full of leaves. Our attempts to save the poor creature were in vain as he took off into the back and gulped the thing in one swallow. The noticable lack of chipmonk activity around our place, previously attributed to our cat, has now been explained as well as his expanding behind. Thank goodness we deworm regularly.

The photo that is my avatar shows his hunting spot. I thought he liked it because it's in the shade now I realize he's just waiting for his next victim. I would be lying if I told you I didn't praise him for his efforts. It does reduce the food supply for snakes so this is like a job for him now.

Just weighed Maska who is now 12 months old, plus 3 weeks. He weighs a huge 43 kilos. His height is about 29 inches. We have just read the above post which states they don't stop growing until they are between 3 and 5 years old. Help...it will be like have a pony in the house if he carries on growing until then.

Just weighed and measured them again today:

Jasper at 2 years: 27.5 kg and 70 cm at the shoulders.
Vixen at 4 years: 23.5 kg and 56 cm at the shoulders.

I think Jasper will still gain weight as he gets older, finally reaching adult weight around 3-4 years old. Vixen is 4 years old and is at her final adult weight (though she loses weight in the summer when it is warmer and gains weight during the winter).

Hi
just weighed all the pups
1 9lbs 3ozs
2 6 9
3 8 1
4 8 6
5 8 11
6 7 10
7 8 4
8 8 5

the weights seem ok to me apart from no 2 who has always been the small one of the litter ( I hate that word runt ) he has also got a problem , on both of his front legs he has got a bald spot a bit like a callous, the vets (he called in two more to havea look) said they have never seen it before), he gave me some fungicidal cream but that hasnt worked so he has plucked some hair from around the spots and has sent them off to be analized, the pup though has got full mobility in his legs pete

Dakota now weighs in at 50kg (think he is 14 months now), he looks good until he has been in swimming then actually looks skinny, he has a thick coat which makes him look bigger than he is

remember folks dakota is a Mal, so dont get mixed up with weights of tams

We have been to the vet today for the first check-up. She weighs 3,7 kilo's at 8 weeks and 2 days and the vet estimated that she will be under 20 kilo's when she is fully grown. :o She is a pretty girl, but I do hope she will be a bit bigger. People on the streets don't ask if she is a baby wolf, but many people asked if she is a baby fox, when I was on my way to the vet. Where there more Tamaskan puppies with this weight when they where 8 weeks? And how much do they weigh now?

Please dont worry too much about the weight of your puppy right now. For example. I had a Susi puppy who was just TINY....much smaller than the rest and we called him Tiny Tim. Well he grew and grew and grew and now he is a very tall boy by the name of Onai..... you will have seen him here on our forum. He is lovely and about same height as Skye. This breed never ceases to amaze me how they change from puppies into adults.

We had a tiny tina as well :) and Raff (Blufawn Beast) was also very small at 8 wks because he was poorly, you can see him on the dog showing club now, he made a good size.

Kodi was weighed today at 4.2kg and she's eating for england at the moment, which is good, a lot of people have said that she looks like she's gonna be a big girl, but then everyone thinks she's a husky! :D So i have done a lot of "she's a tamaskan" followed by answering the standard "what are they?" haha!

Our girl Cassidy is coming up on 11-months and she's a lean - not mean - loving machine. :D

When doing research for "raw" and "barf" diets - found a great article on recipes that mentioned German Shepherds have this lean look for almost two years. (I think Lynne and others have mentioned this too since Tams have that GS component.)

The main point in that article was to not rush to put extra weight on the dog.

They're lean, they're growing and developing - an overreaction to bulk them up would just cause more harm than good. They'll fill out on their own accord.
