Paka's new "trick"

Post by AngieH » Sun Apr 01, 2012 1:07 am

Well, Paka turned 20 weeks old last week. This week we start formal obedience training together at Columbus All Breed Training Club. This is her last "homespun" training video. The next one will be our Basic Obedience graduation exhibition.

She's a smart little girl, eager to please and seems to enjoy the training and performance process. As long as she keeps having fun, I'll keep giving her new things to learn.
I hope you enjoy it too!

Very clever... wish Zephyr was more toy driven but he is all about food treats.

Great training, though doing the through the legs when she is bigger might be a problem

That thought *had* occurred to me. :? Usually I teach my dogs that trick much later. But since Paka is expected to get big, I thought perhaps she should learn it while she's still small enough to do I easily. Later she can learn she has to "duck" (I hope so, anyway) She still has some growing to do, but there's no hope my stubby legs will get any longer!

Thanks everyone. I will work on getting some pics up soon.

Mostly, I'm just experimenting to see where her aptitude and abilities lie.

We're starting with basic obedience and I do have a goal of going for her therapy dog qualification. (that's not really too hard. Just canine good citizen requirements plus a handful of medical/infirmity specific manners. (the hardest thing is the "leave it" command so a dog doesn't try to eat a patient's food or medicine  )

But I like to teach "tricks" to be used in therapy situations to entertain patients. I have a whole "schitck" that can be done with therapy dogs, including the dog "limping" into physical therapy with a patient and getting "cured" by the patient's kiss. :o And a dog "praying" at the patient's bedside :) . Stuff like that. I would like to raise Paka to work with me in that role.

But anything Paka works at in the training club will be guided by her talent and enjoyment. I firmly believe dogs are happiest with a mission and working with their people. But I don't believe in *making* a dog work against his/her nature.

I'm still just exploring Paka's nature.
