Greatest friend ever

Post by A10 » Sat Feb 04, 2012 1:22 pm

Hi. I'm Richard. Cody(my Tam) is 4 years old. I got him, as a pup, from Lynn Hardey. I honestly don't know where to start, I could write a book about him, but what i'll do is bullet points to relieve your boredom.
1, Looking for a GS (had 2) Somehow got Lynns number and she said "once you've had a Tamaskan you will never go back to a GS." She was right. Lynn was a great help.
2, Cody has never chewed/destroyed anything he shouldn't.
3, Great with people(they love him) and kids(ditto). Good with 99% of dogs but, if they get violent, he puts them in their place. Has cat friends, is friendly with horses, sheep, cattle, squirrels and even bees. The only thing he kills are wasps (he was stung as a pup and hasn't forgotten).
4, Amazing temperament, takes everything in his large stride. Not ever bothered by fireworks(I take him out and he looks at them fascinated).
5, Sleeps beside bed. Never wakes to go out.Infact, he is a laid back guy.
Well, I guess that will do. Except to say since he and I moved into a flat (divorced after 30 years) last Dec17, there is just me and him(perfect) I'm retired so it's 24/7 companionship. I spoil him with steak/liver/hear/chicken a marrow bone each day and a 3 hour walk through the woods (off lead) at the end of which we go to the local pub. which allows dogs, where he crashes out whilst i read the paper. I cannot tell you what he means to me. However, he knows who is the Alpha. (I would not recommend such a dog to someone with no experience). I trained him myself, it just takes patience and the ability to anticipate.
Finally, I think I will contact Lynn to find out about breeding from him. I think it would only be the once, it's not for the money, it is because he deserves the "fun" atleast once in his life ;)

Sounds like a fantastic companion Richard and you've obviously done a really really good job with Cody. Our local allows dogs too but mine would cause utter chaos!

Hi Richard, thanks for sharing with us. Tamaskans are indeed a LOT better than pure German Shepherds.

However, like German Shepherds, they likely still have that "rescue dog's" instinct (according to an email that Tarheel from North Carolina sent me two years ago) inherited by the German Shepherds whom were used in the Tamaskans line and quoting them, I would imagine the Tamaskan could excel in Search and Rescue if some one took the time and effort to work with them. They pick up tasks so easily and quickly is would be one of your more easier dogs to train. They just won't make good guard dogs because of their friendly nature as you probably already know.

Hope to talk to you soon.

A very good resource. A Doggie pub is worth its weight in gold :-)
