Re: Am I really stepping on other people's culture?
It's a difficult one, on the one hand in a culture where dogs are companions etc it's understandable that the idea of eating them makes me feel uneasy, however, to other cultures cows are sacred, what must they think of us? I imagine they experience the same feeling of shock? Outrage? I can accept t...

Re: A guide dog. Oh, boy, what have I gotten myself into?
You're looking at 2 years hard work, the dog has to be capable of going anywhere, exposed to everything you can think of, objects, people, places, has to be able to handle public transport, behave itself in restaurants etc. Its a full time Job, with no guarantee of success, and if they don't have wh...

Re: A guide dog. Oh, boy, what have I gotten myself into?
You will need to find a dog with the desire to work close with a person, but with the ability to learn to act on there own initiative. It's not just enough to choose a breed because they're supposed to be inteligent, and there's a reason guide dog organisations breed there own, and more importantly ...

Re: New outcrosses?
The issues with the csv might be because people want a dog that is more likely to fit in with the average pet owner. I like the csv breed, I'd like to own one someday, but they're a special or should that be specialist breed, that most people aren't suited for, even more so than huskies. But this is...

Funny you look at that as terrible news, I suppose not coming from a country in which it used to be that because of the strict criteria, most puppies were around 10 months before they could legally enter without quarantine time, might give you that perspective, for us in the UK having the rules rela...

I guess it's horses for courses. If I had dogs that were fantastic with all unfamiliar dogs, I might like the idea. Re: Signs of aggression?
Imo, any dog that would go into attack a dog showing such obvious non threatening signals as rolling on its back, as yours did, isn't an alpha, its a bully and needs to have its interactions with other dogs carefully controlled. The Utonagan had some collie used in it, so its not exactly adding anything that hasn't already been done. Some of the show rough Collies are small, but the smooth's aren't, some are quite tall infact. They're totally different to the border collie. Its about compromise, you can't have everything in...

Re: Signs of aggression?
It's important not to confuse reactiveness and aggression. A reactive dog is a dog who will display a bunch of behaviors (lunging, barking, growling and carrying on) until the perceived threat goes away or he/she moves away from it. A aggressive dog is one who, without trigger will quietly and sudd...

I know a trainer who took on a Dobermann as an older puppy, said he was the most difficult dog she's ever worked with. Inside the house brilliant, outside, completely overstimulated by everything. For me personally, I would like to see solid white/black added to the standard. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't believe the tamaskan is at the stage where potentially valuable genetic material in terms of diversity, should be lost due to arbitrary things like colour and incorrect masking. Perhaps when the breed has an effective population size that isn't comp...

So, someone can breed wolfdog's, and then spend 20 years or more selecting dogs with the most desirable temperament traits, and they wouldn't consider them domestic animals? That I'm afraid, is total crap.
There are csv that aren't at F20 and they're an FCI recognized breed.

As someone with reactive dogs, I can certainly sympathize with you. A lot of it is going to be helped by managing distance, I run on the idea that looking is fine, eyeballing, lunging and barking isn't. You say that before you let her go play, you expect calm, this is good, do you do this with on le...
