I do remember my Max going through a fearful stage just as you described. I asked the breeder and she told me that some do but generally grow out of it. She was right. It lasted a couple months at most.

Max is worse. He seems to go through stages where he'll eat at least one while meal a day (being 2 cups kibble and one can dry in bowl all day). Other times he won't eat anything for a whole day. Only thing he never turns down are chicken liver, and of course our dinner. If it's meat and it's cooked...

Regarding the "lock and stare" when approaching or around other dogs, mostly other intact dogs, and never a bitch, Max does this all the time. Oh my, you've had enough sadness and I know what it feels like to lose your best friend. I came across this breed by a friend of mine who also shared my love of the gray wolf, but didn't want to even consider trying to domestic a hybrid of any level.
