older dog, new found sense of play

Post by Hawthorne » Mon Mar 10, 2014 7:55 pm

Freyja is now 5 years old. She has always been playful but has often stood aside and let the hooligans play alone. In the last few months, however, she has gotten very playful. My husband brought home a new toy and she adores it (small blue squeaky soft rubber ball). Her play has increased in intensity and duration. It's really endearing to see.

She is our pack alpha and maybe that's where the seriousness has come from.

Has anyone else seen older dogs take up play with new vigor like this? So fun!

bark as if no one can hear you
catch the ball on the fly
lick like there's no end to kissing
sleep on a sofa nearby
jump like the sky is the limit
sit by the fire with friends
stay with the ones who love you
run like the road never ends

We adopted a rescue dog about a month ago to give Kumho some company. She's just over 4 years old and has no problem holding her own when it comes to roughhousing. She's even executed some very nice takedowns a wrestler would be proud of.

Bobbi was born old is what we say. He was always a calm dog with sometimes crazy moments like you talk about here. He is now becoming 11 and he still sometimes have moments that he things he is a little puppy

tyson is about 8 or 9. he developed some dog aggression issues not long after i got him (4ish years ago) and as our training progressed, balto came along, i introd him to other dogs, he has just come more and more out of his shell and is so playful. you wouldnt know how old he is if you saw him running around and doing spins.
