HI!
I finally figured this out with the help of a little birdie!

Here is a special paper from the BVA on exactly how they score hips. I think it's fascinating--technical--but fascinating!

Click the link, click download in the upper right corner, then click download anyway. Does this still not work? The document is a .pdf. 12 pages.

I can email it to folks too, if you wish.

Oh, gosh--the original file size is gigantic at over 100MB... I scaled it down to 17...so I can email to people now if they wish. Assuming you can receive a 17MB attachment.
So much for helping. LOL

After waiting 7 long months from the date of the x-ray til the day the results of Tarheel Corolla Dune (Kana) came back. Kana has passed her BVA hip scoring.
Unfortunately my local vet will not be sumbitting anymore x-rays to the BVA. I am currently working with another vet near my work and they appear happy to help me out.

Congratulations John. Dont forget to send copies to TDR... it dosnt usually take so long to get the results so dont know what went
wrong there. Several years ago when I had one of the dogs done at a vets I dont usually use I waited for a couple of months
for the result. When it didnt come I phoned the vet and he couldnt help so I phoned the BVA. They told me that they hadnt
received any xray for my dog so I went along to the vets and low and behold the xray was still there!!!!! I dont use that vet anymore  His excuse was he asked his 'son' to post it for him

:o Awesome John! :D Sad to hear that your local vet is no longer submitting results to the BVA but I'm glad to see that one of my top favourite Tamaskan dogs from Blaze and Tundra has passed her hip scoring. Please keep me updated on the future status for Kana and her husband Jaeger, I look forward to hearing about the duo's role in producing another generation of American-born Tamaskans :D I won't spill too much informations on facebook this time like I did with the Yellowstone litter ;)

Glad to hear she passed... congrats! :D

By the way, I just heard that as of 01/01/2012, the new BVA rules are that all dogs have to be fully anesthetized (under heavy general sedation with intubation etc) - not just mildly sedated. Can anyone shed some more light on this? The owner of the dog I want to breed with Vixen (during her next heat!!) is very concerned about full anesthesia due to the risky procedure - I recommended that she finds another vet (ASAP!!) but apparently every vet must sign the BVA form to confirm that the dog has been fully sedated (and intubated). Help!? :?

EDIT: I just emailed the BVA for more info... will post a reply here once I know more.

If there isn't a way around this then I will NOT be scoring with BVA again.. No way I'm going to put my dog under full anesthetics just for some hip X-rays.

Dear Debby

Nothing has changed in point 3.1 of the Procedure Notes for the past 10 years except the date of the guide from 1988 to 1999.

It has always said:

“(a). it is NECESSARY to employ general anaesthesia, narcosis or deep sedation to enable only mechanical (ie non-manual) restraint for the positioning of the animal;”

When radiographs come in we have no way of telling whether they have been done under sedation or under a general anaesthetic. Our advice would be to be guided by what the Vet advises.

Kind regards

Sandra
It sounds to me like the vet in Germany is reading too much into the rules... it seems that mild sedation is sufficient after all.

My new vet has just done 3 of my dogs for me with just a sedation. It cost me only £80 per dog with £50 extra to the BVA.
Not to mention much kinder to the dog.
My previous vet that I had temporarily at the last house charge over £200 per dog and would only do the xray with anesthetic.
Just goes to show you need to shop around ;)

That's wonderful news about Kana's hip score! It would be a dream come true for me to have a female pup from Jaeger x Kana. The name we have picked out for a girl is Tikaana. I didn't realize until a couple of days ago how close Tikaana is to Kana 'Ti :)

I'm really hoping my vet will be good with the hip scoring. I'll bet the stress is high waiting for results.

Congratulations again on Kana's hip score. She passed the test! :D

that is what i'm looking for because if not it will mean leaving sam to recover in a small cage which he is scared to the point of pooping and won't go with strangers so the stress to get his hips done would be too high for him for me to be happy getting it done... but the problem with waiting to find a vet is, he isn't getting any younger...
