52 dogs we know the results for (either tested or from parents tests)

43 = Clear
7 = Carrier
2 = Affected (both from the same litter)
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
.............................................................
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Im all about the pie charts at the moment.
Here is a pie chart that kind of inaccurately represents DM in Tamaskan.
The main reason it is inaccurate is that it covers 61 dogs whose results are known either by testing or being 'clear by default'.
However at the moment we are mainly testing the lines that we already know may contain DM because they have 'carrier' parents, therefore this pie chart shows an excellent result in my opinion.
The number of dogs found to be 'at risk' for DM still stands at 2.
Well done everyone who tested their dog.

That was my advice as well. Is that what other breeders think? I think it needs to go beyond that, too, though. I think the resulting pups should all be tested. Should our goal be to eliminate carriers out of the gene pool? If so, only clear pups should go to breeding homes from here on out. What do others think?

We'll have to have Freyja tested, as she is a littermate of Wave's. Also Darwin, as he is cousins (?) with them.

You have access to the breeders section on this forum right? Read this topic under Health: DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) Results.

The end goal ofcourse will be to eradicate the whole disease out of the Tamaskan but it should be taken slow... You don't want the gene pool getting too small as other problems (maybe worse then DM) may pop up then. At the moment the advise is to test all breeding dogs and make sure that ALL matings contain at least one parent that is tested clear for the disease. That way you will prevent any more At Risk dogs of being born.

You are free to test all your pups if they come from a carrier x clear mating and decide what pups to send to breeding homes then. I will also be doing that myself BUT please remember that if you select a dog for breeding you should look at the bigger picture (temperament, overall health, breed type etc.). I don't think it's wise to ONLY select on the DM factor..

In an ideal world if the gene pool for Tamaskans was bigger and since DM seems to effect such a small number of dogs then it would be wise to not breed carriers, but as Rahne says the gene pool is probably not big enough to cope with the removal of otherwise good breeding dogs. I would say that if a dog was exceptional in every other way then being a DM carrier should not prevent breeding, but if possible only the clear pups sent to breeding homes to prevent too many carriers being breed from in the future and making erradication difficult.
