Wow - at 12 weeks Mowgli was 24 lbs! He is now a little shy of 20 weeks and weighs 42 lb, and is 20-21" at the shoulder, I think. Hard to get an accurate measurement!!

Loki @ 13 weeks came in at 41.6 lbs.

Hank @ 13 weeks came in at an even 40 lbs.

Thanks for the growth info, our vet who has never seen a Tam before suggested we find such a chart as he was concerned that the boys "may" be a bit large for their age, now I can assure him that they appear to be quite average.

Also, our vet suggested we begin a high protein, low carb diet (almost a RAW diet) to ensure good health as they continue their growth as opposed to the good quality "puppy" food we've been feeding which, in his opinion, contain too many carbs. I found conflicting info on the webs and was wondering what more experienced Tam owers were feeding their pups.

We do have easy access to both wild and domestic game - does anyone RECOMMEND RAW for their Tams?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

J.

I feed a high quality puppy kibble. Ill keep him on that til around the end of the year. Raw feeding is really expensive in Australia.

Be careful with high protein. If they don't use it (aren't running around / working) it can cause kidney failure and very runny stools.

Thanks for the 16 wk vs 19 wk comparison - VERY comforting!

As I raise meat rabbits I was thinking to supplement their "puppy" chow with HEALTHY rabbit culls, perhaps 2-3 per month, perhaps more if it's a BAD time for buns. Sound reasonable?

From what my vet told me rabbits are very fatty and contain a lot more protein than beef. They did a study on feeding cats (I know it's not dogs but bare with me) eating 100% rabbit for 12 weeks and 2 actually died because of what I mentioned before - kidney failure. If you plan on doing that I would only mix in very very small amounts and watch them closely.

Actually "domestic" rabbits are extremely lean - hence the "rabbit starvation" myth (which can be avoided by eating the organs also). I've read of humans, who due to poverty ate no meat except domestic rabbit and ended up losing all of their teeth!

Sound advice about the "very very small amounts".

Thanks!

Not sure if this belongs in 2012 since Mowgli is a 2012 pup, but at 6 months he is 55 lb and 25 inches at the shoulders.

I know that in winter survival training, one gets warned about rabbit starvation - the average northern hare, while high in proteins, is so lean that it doesn't have enough fat to let the human body process the meat without an additional fat source - without any other food source, you end up with hyperproteinemia and eventual kidney failure.

Same thing with seal - always have some blubber with the meat. :o

No matter what mammal you're feeding, you have to have fats to break down proteins. The reptilian kidney can do somewhat better on this score than mammalian ones, but even they have to have some lipids to do their job - mostly to the integrity of the cellular membrane.

Like everything else, much can be done as an occasional treat but like candy, it's a poor choice for a steady diet.
