Reverse Cough/Sneeze

Post by Tropicalbreeze » Mon Aug 09, 2010 9:37 pm

Aloha!

Our new pup Cassidy sometimes has what is best described as a reverse cough or sneeze. Our pomeranian has it from time to time.

But since it's usually a small dog condition, we're just curious if anybody else has encountered it?

Thanks in advance.

Koda does this a few times a month. At most once a week.

Reverse sneezing/coughing can happen in almost any breed. There are a number of causes for it: respiratory problems, colds, Koda does it from a deviated septum, etc. Another cause is excessive pulling on a leash. The pressure against the trachea can cause reverse sneezing.

Unless it's happening consistently--like every day or several times a day--it's not something that I would be too concerned about :)

Thanks Tori! We weren't too worried but were curious about other's experiences with these dogs.

I've never had this problem with my Tamaskans so can't offer any advice unfortunately.

Lynn... It's very mild...kind of like a long snort. Doesn't last too long but again just wanted to survey the pack. ;)

In other news... Poop is firming up nicely. The husk add to the food has helped a lot.

I can't speak for the Tamaskan side... since I don't have one... but of my two huskies, Koda does it frequently due to his deviated septum :) I've heard it happen often with huskies. I wouldn't say it's "common" but it's not so uncommon that it's concerning, in my opinion :)

i had a SBT x Collie who used to have this problem. used to last a couple of seconds and scared me to death the first time it happened :o but like yours didn't happen often so not wasn't too concerned.....we thought it was when she got dust up her nose??? a couple of pats on the side used to cure it.

My Norwegian Elkhound has experienced the "reverse sneeze" since she was a pup. No big deal but def gets your attention when you 1st experience it.

Zeus does this too. The first time he did it it frightened me I thought he was ill but I don't take any notice anymore.

Snoopy does it on a weekly basis, the vet says it's no big deal but it sure sounds weird
