This isn't necessarily about tamaskans but I would like to ask for some advice. Our other dog, Charlotte (shiba inu) is small for her breed and is a good 7 pounds overweight. She was 4 pounds overweight to begin with (paw injury so we couldn't exercise her ever) but recently we had to call in a sitter to watch over her while we were out of town and the sitter believed that she was supposed to fill the food bowl to the brim each feeding. Charlotte gained a few pounds and we definitely want to get her back down to a healthy weight. Any tips? We don't want her to have any health issues down the road because of it!
Assuming she doesn't have any health issues causing the weight issue, then diet and excercise is probably the way to go. If going on walks is too taxing on her joints, then swimming is always a good alternative. Look into how much carbs her food has, as well as which kinds, and see if switching foods may help. I have a friend with 2 staffie mixes who kept putting on the pounds while they were on Merrick grain free kibble. Once she switched to a flavor that had rice in it and less potatoes, her boys started to lose weight. She also took them swimming 3x a week instead of once every 2 weeks.
