No grain diet?

It's been said few times that tamaskans don't do well on kibble with grain. Just how common is that? Is it just the grainy kibble or the carbohydrates in general? Is rice, potatoes, pasta ok? How about fruits?

I plan on feeding kibble half the time and cooked (or raw) meals the other days. What kind of meat do your dogs get? Which parts? Is it ok to feed meat you can get at butcher's for dogs (like legs, tails, heads, offal, hearts, tounges etc)?

What veggies do you give them? I'm planning on a bit larger garden next year to grow something for the dog too :P Carrots, cabbage (our german shepherd loved sour cabbage), red beets, pumpkin, green beans, peas...

I have never actually fed Wylie a grain diet ;) but dogs rarely are allergic to grains, despite what people say. If properly processed they can be very beneficial to dogs :) For example Acana is an excellent brand. I found Orijen a bit too much for Wylie and his poops were terrible. I ended up using TOTW (Taste of the Wild) in every flavour, but when I changed jobs I found Kasiks, which is grain free and Wylie looooves it!

My boys both get bits of raw chicken and some balanced raw pucks every once in a while. Wylie gets lots of veggies like carrots, broccoli, etc. He doesn't really like fruit actually lol. Wylie is the kind of dog (it's about 40/60) that pumpkin is processed as a laxative in his body, so we don't do that anymore. Some dogs can take it and others can not.

So in general kibble with grains is considered to be junk food?

We're planning on our own chicken and maybe rabbits next spring and the dog will get his share too :) We have about 1 ha of apple orchard, so I hope our dog will like apples, because Skip (german shepherd we used to have) couldn't care less for them :P

Is it recommended/necessary to supplement dogs diet with vitamin-mineral mix if you base his diet on raw/cooked meat with veggies? Or maybe in certain age group? (Coming from horse experience here, I have to order minerals from Austria to get the right thing for our ground type. But then again grass and hay are so very poor compared to meat :P )

If you feed raw you have to give kelp as a supplement I think. I don't tend to supplement because I don't feed fully raw. I do give omegas and sometimes Yoghurt, but that's about it :)

No I wouldn't say all grains are junk, again, Acana makes a great food and lots of their diets have grains / legumes.
