Therapy Dog

Post by Wave2Tuffy » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:27 am

Wave passed his Canine Good Citizen test! He will now continue on to be part of the Thera-Paws team at our local hospital as a therapy dog. I am soooo proud of my boy :D :D :D The facility is very excited to have him on board. His title as mascot is excluded and in this new position he is strictly "Wave" the volunteer therapy dog. He is so awesome...hate to keep bragging    The people that come in contact him all wish they had their own Tamaskan! So glad he is mine :D :D :D I have also decreased my work hours to continue his training. I will now be a part time employee & a "full time den mother" to Wave. I plan on taking his training to the fullest extent! :D

Thank You, Thank You! I dont think I have ever really had a dog that thrived so well with training. He is so eager to learn & please. It also means that I never worked with or trained a Tamaskan

I plan on doing a video of Wave when he goes to the hospital to be fitted for his vest & picture taken for his ID. I will keep all of you posted!

Wave's 1st day as a therapy dog :D :D :D I originally thought it would happen quicker BUT between his training classes & other schedules it took a while to get all planets lined up. He was impressive as usual. He has a picture ID badge for his new volunteer status too.  I wish you could've seen my boy jump right into the chair to get his pic taken for his ID. TOO FUNNY!

He typically acts gaurded on his 1st encounter at new places...today was no different. Nobody noticed that behavior but me, though, because he did so awesome. He played down some of his commands, again, typical as he was checking out the new surroundings. The funniest thing was his "hug and kiss" command. I taught him that when he was lil' & now it can be a lil' overwhleming because of his size. He jumps up & puts his paws on my shoulders & gives me a kiss. Well, I gave the command in front of a group of people at the hospital & for the FIRST TIME ever his paw got hung up under my shirt!   So Waves 1 paw was lifting up my shirt while the other was on my shoulder.....as he gave me a kiss. You get the point? It was very funny anyhow.

It was too funny to ignore....the spectators, I think, would have ignored it, but it was too funny for me NOT to acknowledge.    It was just as bad as it sounds too! Def not a G-rated experience :o Wave being slightly out of his element added that extra fire to the humour 8-)

Oh my goodness, I still remember the 1st dog trainer who said this breed would never be a good therapy dog. I was surprised at such a harsh judgement when this was the very 1st Tamaskan they EVER encountered. Not to mention it was Wave they were talking about? Jeez, I need to make a video & send it to them    Wave is becoming a SUPER STAR as a therapy dog :P 8-) :P He is doing soooo flipping awesome. I have to be the PROUDEST therapy dog owner, on my street, anyhow? 8-) 8-) He continues to blow my mind & how he "just gets it"......he just knows what he is suppose to know?

I have to also share his command of "sit", in any office with chairs, now includes him sitting in ONE of those chairs. Never taught him that....and it is too freaking funny.

That is awesome Lisa. After meeting Wave I knew he was an awesome dog. That trainer most just be judging because of Tamaskans looking like wolves or the fact that they have husky influence in them.

What does Wave do as a therapy dog, I'm guessing sit with patients and let thempet them but O also guess there is a bit more to it.
