Congrats!!! He is one of my favorites from that litter :D
He looks great, very similar to Jasper (his brother) - are both his testicles in place?

He's a cutie. Take more photos once he settles in, if you can get him to stay still long enough. If he's anything like the Loki from the Heidi x Bodie litter, it won't be easy

Here's Loki after exploring his new home. He doesn't like posing for the camera, so I can only get shot of him laying about.

We did take him to the vets for a health test before he left and the vet said both testicles are in place.

Im so surprised at how fast Loki picks things up. Its been less than a week and he already knows how to sit, down and stay (only when there's no distractions though). And for the first time today, he rang the bell for a #2 potty in the morning and a #1 potty in the evening. Such a smart boy.

Here he is in his stay command (only for a few seconds) and enjoying his treat for being so good.

Lovely boy! Keep up the good work with training - let us know how recall goes with Loki once you get to it - it's so worth the work to be able to let them run free!

I took him to the vet a few days ago and he weighed in at 16 lbs. The vet told me that his testicles have not dropped yet. I'm leaning on the side of neutering Loki, but am still doing research on the pros and cons of doing this. I have no intentions of breeding, so that is the reason why im leaning towards neutering.

I do have a question for all of you with Tamaskan experience. My boy loves to nip when he's in a playful mood and I am trying to control that. I know it's his way of playing, but I don't want him to think that this is ok. So when he does nip, I give him a stern NO, and try to refocus the nipping to a chew toy. If that does not work, I cradle the back of his neck with one hand and close his snout with the other and look into his eyes and say NO. I hold this until he squirms a little.

Is this the best way to handle this situation? Any advice would be appreciated.

He is such a joy to have around and I cant wait to take him on walks once he is fully vaccinated.

Thanks again Lynn for such a sweet boy!

Loki is such a habsome lad!

In puppy pre-school, they showed us a technique to discourage play-biting. I don't know if it would help you, but it might be worth a try. It's very similar to what you already doing with the key difference being that we didn't release her when she squirmed, but only after she relaxed.

When puppy teeth touch people skin, all fun stops and she was put into the "K-9 time-out" (person kneeling behind the dog in a "sit" reaching around to hold one hand on her chest, pressing her snugly back into the person's body and the other hand around her muzzle holding the mouth closed) this gently but effectively immobilized her. We held this postion until she gave a sigh of resignation and relaxed.
Every one in class learned this same gentle hold and at the end of each class we played "pass the puppy" where we took turns playing with one another's dogs and the dogs "learned" that apparantly, *all* people did this so it was better to be careful with teeth and keep them off of all the people.

These were all very young puppies 8-16 weeks old so they were very impressionable.

Honestly, though, I have to admit Paka still play-bites my husband. But he was not consistant with the consequences if it seemed like just an "accidental" bite to him. (he spoils her) She learned fast that she could push it and get away with it with him.

Hope it helps.

That makes total sense. Thanks for the detailed explanation. That was exactly what I was looking for. Ill give it a try and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!

What a beautiful pup. I am so jealous. I wanted a puppy from this litter soooo bad since it was Susi's last litter, but it was just bad timing for us. Please keep posting pictures so I can enjoy them from afar!!!

He looks great! I think he'll look a lot like Jasper (his older brother) when he is mature.
nine00 wrote:I took him to the vet a few days ago and he weighed in at 16 lbs.
Hmmm he's about 7 kilos, which is a little bit on the light side for his age... but don't worry too much. Jasper is also very light for his size / age: tall and lanky. Definitely don't start overfeeding him to bulk up his weight, just keep feeding him normally - it is much better for them to stay lean as puppies (for their hip growth) rather than gain too much weight and grow too fast. ;)

Shame to hear that, but not too surprised because cryptorchidism is a known issue with Susi x Jackal litters. It is possible that one (or both) testicles will still come down over the next few weeks. Anyway, fortunately you have no intention of breeding so it's not the end of the world if they don't come down. As for neutering, IF one or both testicles don't come down then he will have to be neutered (so that the retained testicles don't develop into cancerous tumors later in life). However, there is no immediate rush - I would certainly wait to let him mature properly and then have him neutered around 12-18 months old. You may have some issues during puberty with dominance (there are various reports that cryptorchid dogs may be more 'difficult' due to hormonal imbalance) but this is usually a phase that they grow out of with age and training. Some people recommend early neutering (around 6 months old) but I would personally wait a bit longer, if possible, so that he grows to his full size, etc.

Jasper was exactly the same as a pup, and Zora also shows the same behavioral traits... it's a typical 'puppy' thing and it sounds like you are doing the right thing to discourage it. You can also 'squeal' when he bites you and he should instantly stop (the same way that puppies squeal if they are playing with an older dog that goes too far or is being a bit too rough). It's something that dogs understand and combined with a stern 'no biting' and then presenting a nice chew toy to play with instead, he should learn very quickly.

Thanks for all the great info Sylvaen. I've been weighing Loki weekly and he seems to be gaining 3 - 4 pounds per week. He weighed in at 22 lbs. today, so he is gaining weight very fast (I think). He's also got so much better with the nipping. Now I just have to teach him that it's also not okay to nip other people's feet.

This is way fast I believe... I thought it wasn't healthy if they were putting on more 2-3 pounds a week or 1/2 pound a day.

Here's a quick update on Loki. He's a little over 3 months old now and weighs in at about 25 lbs. He continues to learn new tricks, his latest is roll over, and is a absolute joy to have around. I couldn't ask for a better puppy. 1 more month until I can take him on walks outside of the house. Woohoo!
