She looks a LOT like her mother (Vega) when she was this age, so I expect she will grow up to look very similar to her. ;)

When I hear the name Vala... My mind automatically thinks it's the short name for Valhalla which means immortal.

I thought Valhalla was just the hall in Asgard where some of those slain in battle go. Didn't know it meant immortal too...?

We were planning to call her Pandora (after the Greek Myth) but the name just didn't suit her and it was a bit of a mouthful to say, even if I shortened it to Panda - but that also didn't suit her.

It also sounded silly to call "Zora and Pandora" (and confusing for the dogs) so I picked the name Vala instead. The Kalevala is an epic Finnish poem of myth and folklore that features The Sampo (a magical box, which is where I originally got the idea to call her Pandora) - 'Sampo' is the name of Vala's father. As the Tamaskan breed originates from Finland, it makes sense to pick a name related to Finnish folklore.

I figured that Kalevala (like Pandora) would also be a bit of a mouthful for a puppy name so I shortened it to Vala; the 3rd generation female with a name that starts with the letter 'V': Vixen --> Vega --> Vala. Interestingly, Vala means 'singled out' in Old German (her father, Sampo, lives in Germany) and it also means 'chosen' in Welsh.

She was the last puppy to be born and was the 'runt' of the litter - it took me about 30 minutes to revive her at birth and she almost died because she was so weak. For the first 2 weeks of her life it was questionable if she would even survive so she got plenty of extra TLC and I had a special attachment to her from the very beginning.

So, the name Vala is very appropriate all around and she responds to it already. She is settling in and is getting along great with Jasper, Vixen and Zora.

yeah, they are sooo cute together - my heart melts whenever I see them playing and he is so gentle. :)
but Vala also likes to play rough with Zora... so funny to hear Vala growling and lunging at her when Zora is 3x her size :P

I really never expected she would turn out so dark (lol)
I thought she would stay silver grey, like her mum... :P
She has a black layer of guard-hairs and a light undercoat - looks pretty cool / unusual.
