Tana (Quicksilver Pyrargyrite)

Post by Tana » Wed Jan 23, 2013 10:43 pm

Hi everyone :)
my name is Kaja, I am student from Slovenia. I am reading this forum for a while and I decided, that is finally time, to introduce our Tamaskan Tana ;) She is out of Vega (Sylvaen Vatrena Lisica) and Sampo (Alba Rhudar), DOB: 30.3.2012. Tana is a really sweet little monster  Because she has a lot of energy and desire to work, we do search and rescue trainings, some obedience and tricks.

Here are some photos of Tana (she is now about 57 cm high and weighs about 20 kg):
2-4 months old

Awesome photos! Glad to see how she has developed - she really does look great!! :D
It would be nice to meet up sometime in the spring so Tana can have a family reunion with Vega and Vala, and her grandparents! :)

How do you go about the s/r training and what kind of temper does she have? :)

Thank you all for the nice comments :)
Debby, I think Tana will be veery happy to see her family :) We will definitely come one weekend in spring, thanks for invitation (again ;) ).

Nino, she is playfull, lively, outgoing, naugthy ;) , proud of herself (which is most evident in the movement-she has beautiful movement), confident-has no fears (even fireworks she looked with interest), sweet, gentle, friendly to dogs, people, children. With very nice food drive and also prey drive, very interested in anything that moves. Prey instinct I turned to the balls and other toys, otherwise she would hunt small and even bigger animals  .

As for SAR training, we started at 2 months of age with exposing to different kinds of people, enviroments, various substrates...Then I started to hiding from her at walks. Later someone is holding her and I hid. I wanted she first establish a relationship with me and later with the helper. At 6 months I started working with helpers. Helper showed her food and ran away. Every time a little further and every time she went completely crazy :) "I want this food, where are you going with my food!!" LoL. I had a lot of work with barking, after a while, she barked once maybe twice and then howl  So, I decided to teach her to alert with bringsel. Now I am hiding her toys and after she brings the toy, she recive food. Then, the helper will give her toy and after she will bring the toy to me, she will recive food. Later, the helper will give her bringsel an so on and on... ;)
I must say that she is very good at searching. She finds very quickly, searching systematically with a lot of motivation. We have a lot of fun on the trainings :)
Yuma is very pretty and she alert with barking, wow  :D

I know the barking can be a 'problem' with Tamaskan. I have one girl and one boy, and my girl doesn't bark.

In my opinion, the best background for Tamaskans is winter landscape :) They are so beautiful in snow  ;)

Thanks, Rahne ;)

The most challenging part of SAR training with Tamaskan, in my opinion, is obedience. To motivate the dog to do obedience 15- 30 minutes without intermediate rewards (on exams, competitions). Barking is the least of the problem or not a problem at all. Alerting with bringsel can be in many cases even more effectively. Suppose that due to the strong wind, you don't hear well, if the dog barking or not.

Great photos! I think she is probably taller than Vala, who is around Vixen's size... I was hoping she would grow but Vala was the 'runt' of the litter so I'm not too surprised.

Ahh interesting! So when the dog locates the hidden person / object, it puts the bringsel (dangling from the collar) in its mouth to indicate that it has found the person / object - very clever! :D

1.When I don't working with her (playing, walking, teaching tricks...), she is in the box. Limiting is very important in positive dog training. Punishment here is, that dog doesn't receive food and that you not pay attention to him.
2. All food she receive from my hand, for reward after good job, nice behaviour. I rewarding everything I like. Especially attention on me.
3. She gets most of a food on a walk. She is (was) alwyas on a leash (long leash, 10m or longer). At the beginning, when there was no one, I hid her. When she came, reward.
4. Habituation: I work with her on a bus station, on a field, in the forest, in the shoping center, on a dog show...Leash, food, attention on me, tricks, sit, down, stay...
5. Socialization: Play with other dogs just enough to recall her to play with me. Socialization does not mean play with other dogs! Your puppy must learn about many different dogs, small, large, friendly, playful, a little less friendly. So, I'm taking her to the dog, she becomes familiar with him, I give her a treat infront her nose and take her on. The most important thing is that you are, for your dog, more important than the environment. I have extra nice food for meeting other dogs and people.
6. I am working with clicker. Click, food, click, food. Tana, she looks at me, click, food. On a walk, she walking, walking, Tana, she turns, click, she must come to me, to get her reward.
7. Working with helper. He holds her, I go away, call her, immediately, when she start run very fast, I click and then she give reward, when comes to me. After a while I say YES, instead of click so I don't need to always have a clicker with me.

So does the clicker act more like an attention sound: something like click = food reward? I've always been told that "true" clicker training is when you wait for the dog to perform a desired behavior/action and then click and a treat is given.

She is very pretty - I can see both of her parents in her! She has Sampo's coloring but Vega's facial features.

BTW: I got your email (about coming to visit for a family reunion in a couple of weeks) and will reply soon!
I just haven't had a chance yet because my inbox is overflowing these days... but I can't wait to see you (and Tana) again - it will be a lot of fun! :D
I am very curious to compare Vala and Tana to see how much they have changed (or how much they are the same) in real life.

Arianwenarie, click is a marker of behavior, not an attention sound, and announces the arrival of food. In one my case I was rewarding turns and in the other fast run back to me. You can do capturing, luring, modeling and shaping. Shaping is, when we wait for behaviour and then click.

Debby, no problem. I am sure it will be a lot of fun ;)

Yep, definitely. But I also see some of Vega's influence in her - head is not as broad as Sampo's and her stop doesn't look as deep; it's more moderate. Her height looks to be somewhere in between Sampo and Vega's too - a good mix, imo. :)

Tana is a lovely girl and I'm very impressed with all the training you've put into her...to the point where I'm alllllmost jealous. Hahaha.

I see more of Vega in most of her litter with the more dainty heads. I think it was a great pairing... All the pups have turned out great...

There’s a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is Evil. It’s anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego.
The other is Good. It’s joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness and truth.

The wolf that wins? The one you feed!

~ Cherokee Proverb

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity... I'm not sure about the former.

A few pictures (thanks to the author) from yesterday SAR training. It was a mandatory exercise for all units of rescue dogs from Slovenia. Tana was doing great :) She is starting to bark :D
