Yeah, totally. However I think that even the "solid" black ANCDs have a bit more variation to their coat than a black GSD.Nino wrote:I think Phasing is shown by the difference in the coat, the light undercoat and the dark overcoat whereas a black dog is all black all the way through like the black GSD

Awesome. He's so adorable. Looks like he's having a fun time.
And wow. You have some gorgeous scenery where you live. I've always lived in cities my whole life so away from scenery like that unfortunately.

He's very cute, and I wished it was possible to live in a place like that here, but we don't have places like this.. I was going to say that we were flat as a pancake compared to where you live.. but I guess Holland is more flat
How is his personality?
Does he listen well and how does he "solve problems" at this age?

Re: ANCD puppy Yarrow
Thanks everyone, I am very very lucky to live where I do, I'm grateful every single day (and so are the pups, I think!).
Nino - his personality is impressive so far, but of course he is very young still. He is a nice mix of puppy energy but still able to chill out, he has no separation anxiety and is good in his crate, has excellent food and toy drive so his training is progressing very quickly. He can be a little independent, but I think this is not a bad thing (I like some independence in my dogs). He can be slightly wary of new things (chickens, some men he takes a while to warm up to, etc) but if given the chance he always does warm up. He's great in the car, no drooling or carsickness. I walk him offleash everywhere and he sticks like glue. He can be naughty in the house, getting into things, but that is to be expected at this age! He is very determined when he wants something.
I am very interested to see how his personality develops as he gets older. As for problem solving, well, he is a puppy, he doesn't have much in the way of problems! But in all seriousness, I think he will be a good problem solver, but I haven't had much chance to observe this yet.

I agree with you in that a dog needs independence.. I think for me it's really a balance as I want my dog to be independent enough to think for itself and not be clingy but still not so much that he/she won't "work for me"Kootenaywolf wrote:Thanks everyone, I am very very lucky to live where I do, I'm grateful every single day (and so are the pups, I think!).

I meant with "problem solving" in the way of if he want something or wants to do something does he go about it as a smart one or does he give up fairly quickly, if his first or second try doesn't succeed?
I have the idea that this speaks to the intelligence of the dog, if it can figure out "problems"

Of cause it's still hard to say him being so young still

Yes, he is extremely determined if he decides he wants something! He will try many different tactics to get it, and does not give up easilyNino wrote:

And Canadia - I am from BC, though Montana is stunningly beautiful too! Or maybe you knew that and just want to move to Montana

Re: ANCD puppy Yarrow
Well Yes I agree.. the more intelligent a dog is the more different ways will it try to solve a "problem" be it being locked in an enclosure, or trying to get something you are holding.Kootenaywolf wrote: Yes, he is extremely determined if he decides he wants something! He will try many different tactics to get it, and does not give up easilyHe uses his feet to get at things (for instance if you have food in your hand, he will nose at it and then use his feet), which I have heard is indicative of intelligence, too. He also has natural retrieve which shows a willingness to work with people and generally indicates a biddable temperament (and I think is a bit rare in northern-type breeds).
And Canadia - I am from BC, though Montana is stunningly beautiful too! Or maybe you knew that and just want to move to Montana
Sølve taught her self to retrieve.. I never actually trained or played it with her much, as I didn't thing she would like that game.. but she started fetching her toys for me and she will give them to you if she want's to play.
You can throw it an amount of times - until she doesn't find it funny anymore - and she will run/walk to get it and give it back to you.
If you throw it up in the air she will try to catch it (it doesn't really matter how big the toy is, even a very small piece of fabric like 2-3 cm long and 1 cm broad) and givet it back to you.. though after a few times it's all wet because she chews on it

the pulling game she's not really that interested in - sometimes only, but shaking she does a lot..

else wrestling and "biting" game are the best ones (she never really bites, she just open her mouth and softly put her jaws around you or just have you in her open mouth, though she can be naughty and nibble your hair or pull your clothes rarely hard though

What a gorgeous dog! He looks especially beautiful surrounded by the beautiful scenery of British Columbia. I've been out there a couple of times and am totally amazed at how beautiful it is.
What part of B.C. are you in?
Please keep posting photos. I'd love to see more of your dog

Wow I am truly smitten, I have heard nothing but great things about this breed, and am keen to add one to my pack at some point in the future, after a couple more Tam's I think, I am also extremely envious of your surroundings, it looks absolutely beautiful there! I wonder if I can persuade the OH to ditch his career and escape there with a huge pack of dogs with me! Please keep the photo's coming as Yarrow grows, I think i'm not alone in saying this but i'm addicted now and am keen to learn much more about them!

Oh, I love the ones of him stalking, with the collie, and in the water.
The one of him on the mountain looks like it could be a scence from a movie. Gorgeous. He looks like a little wolf pup in his natural habitat. XD

That's your front yard?
Wow. Do you live in a forest or something?
I'm so jealous.
Love the new pics. My favorites are the one of Yarrow yawning on the log and one of him playing with the coolie pup.
How'd you come up with the name Yarrow? Does it have any meaning to you or do you just think it sounds pretty? Just curious.

Yes, I essentially live in the middle of the forest! There are only just over 100 people in the community I live in (no store or anything, just a post office) and the houses are spread out so I have no close neighbors. It's incredibly beautiful! This is the view out of my living room:

As for his name, yeah, Yarrow is a plant that grows around here and I just like how it sounds...I don't think there is any particular reason other than that! It is a very interesting plant though. Achillea Millefolium is the latin name, it's named after Achilles and supposedly he used it to heal many soldiers. It has many medicinal properties, has been used to replace hops in beer, some people even eat it as a vegetable (but it is very bitter...and possibly slightly poisonous!), the tea can be used as a hair rinse, dried yarrow used as perfume and bath powder, and it can even be used as an insect repellant! Etc etc. Sorry that turned out really long, haha.
And Nino - yeah I wish you were coming to this side of Canada (or that Canada was smaller!), it would be great to meet you and show off Yarrow

He's a Cola pup right? I think he looks a bit too small/young to compare to Arrow (the Pepsi pup Ann has)
who's his father?
