Romanian shelter dog Monobi

Post by Tatzel » Tue Jul 10, 2012 9:49 pm

Last Sunday I finally received my boy from Romania.

even though 2 vets vouched in his passpord that he was "in good health", he has severe demodex, infected eyes and possibly heart worms. His face and legs were very crusty and he smelled really bad, his fur felt wiry and awfully dirty, lots of scurf, too!

He was so scared when he arrived here, and when I walked him out the first two days, you couldn't even say "walked out", because he was so scared and nervous, he just would stand there rooted to the ground, shaking like a leaf and pushing himself against walls and corners.
Last evening he actually tailed me for a few steps for the first time.

He's been very shy and exhausted the last two days, but he gets medical treatment now and it's only the 3rd day that he's here, and he already trusts me to the point where he's sleeping right next to me on the sofa, cuddled against me, completely by free will :) we're making great progress every day, and he's become more relaxed around me in such a short matter of time.

I love him so much and despite the additional vet bills, I'm so happy that he's here with me!
He gets treatment for everything now and his fur already looks better, the scurf has become less and the crusts are almost completely gone. His eyes seem to be better also.

Here are various pictures I took;

There are mostly sleeping pics of him because he still sleeps a lot, the transport from Romania to Germany was very straining and stressful for the dogs.

Poor guy, sounds like he was living in hell... Lucky he has you now and hopefully he will live a full and happy life and forget what has happened to him over time...

What a change of luck for him to escape that and be with you. He does look sorry for himself but I can see he will flourish with you. Good luck with him, what are you going to call him? :)

He's very shy but it's only the 4th day now, at least occasionally he approaches me with shy tail wags.
I think last night he wanted to sleep with me in my bed, he came to me at least 3 times or so which was cute but also a little annoying, I was so dead tired and he wouldn't let me sleep. I ignored him and eventually he went back to his bed.

His name originally was Pinky, but now it's Monobi :)

I'm glad you all enjoy these pictures of him!

When we were outside, some guy thought it was a good idea to wash his car where we usually go for short walks, so he was scared again, but did overcome himself and passed the guy washing his van, I thought that was really great!

Today he chewed a bit on his whale toy :)

It's really comfortable, I already did lie in it with Monobi, too :) it even comes with a pillow! It's very easy to clean too, you can pull off the cover and wash it in the washing machine (which was nessecairy because he pissed into it the first night and first morning)

Nice to see him getting around! He seems so sweet natured! Great that he has a loving home now. :D How old is he approximately? He doesn't look too old although it is hard to see because of the demodex.

He certainly is sweet natured :)
And he's approx. 7 months old now!

Here are some pictures from yesterday and today; today we went to the park for the first time, he wasn't very comfortable with the large, open meadow, but he'll get used to it once we go there a few times.
I had the long leash with me, he mostly walked close to me when on it though <3

He will enjoy it in no time... he seem's eager to pick things up... I can see why new things would be unnerving for him. Is he doing good in the house?

He certainly is interessted in new things, a few days ago he would squish himself against walls and corners and whine and panic when people were even only NEARBY on the street, today he walked past them and even trailed after them to pick up their scent as we walked past them. He was still nervous, but it wasn't that bad anymore.

While he's housebroken, there are quite a lot of things he still needs to learn, like "leave it" - he always wants to check out stuff on my living room table, he's a bit hard to train, because food isn't very interessting to him and he seems to get frustrated or rather bored easily, it's kinda hard to keep his attention. I'll keep working on that :) otherwise clicker training is really fun for both of us - when he gets what I would like him to do.

Today I tried to teach "touch", and just when I thought that he 'had it', he just looked the other way when I presented my fingers, then stared into my eyes and then walked off haha.
I guess I should take things slow and make things easier for him to set him up for success, for a dog which never has worked with humans before I think he's picking things up rather fast though.

It seem's like he is making amazing progress :D It will be challenging to teach a 7 month old the basic's of living in a house and with humans. But it shows his good nature when he is willing to work with you even tho it's something he has never done before... He's going to make an amazing companion for you... I also think rescue dogs or dogs that have had it rough are more... idk, grateful? Appreciative? or at least seem to be...

I agree, shelter dogs seem to be more grateful for the life they have with oneself!

We went to the park today again, a friend came with me, so she took these photos.

They never saw me and I never saw the vets, but from what I heard the romanian vets are really a bunch of good-for-nothings...

Anyway! Here are a couple of pictures from over the past few days;

Image

Image

Image

Image

Today it was very hot, so I decided to go to the lake at the park with him again to go swimming; he jumped into the water once because I encouraged him, but then didn't want to anymore, I guess the space between land and water was too steep for him, he could climb up eventually but maybe it scared him.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Short story; after I was in the water and rested on my blanket (in my bikini, mind you) to dry, I noticed that after a short while Monobi intensely stared into one direction, so I figured someone must be nearby and I looked up, and saw a guy standing somewhat with his back to me and at first I thought he would take a piss, but then I realized he was actually jerking off.
Immediatelly I shouted "OI, YOU PIG! I SEE EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE DOING THERE! PISS OFF AND DON'T YOU DARE TO COME BACK AGAIN!" at the top of my lungs, which resulted him into turning away even more and walking away in a hurry, needingly sucking on his cigarette What a loser
I'll never get why men do this, I mean come on, I wasn't even naked. You see women in bikinis -everywhere-, in the ads, in the magazines, at the parks (some are even topless completely to tan), at lakes and public swimming pools, geez. If you need to jerk off so badly, go download a porno or something, but not on my costs
Made me feel good though that I probably made the prick feel miserable about himself. But yeah thanks to Monobi being so alert, I could chase him off right away.

It was still a nice day at the lake :) just wished Monobi would have come swimming with me, but he was too stressed/nervous.

Yeah he can be pretty alert?!
Like he growled and barked at other people when they startled him, at least he started to do this once he felt more 'set in'.

Especailly around my flat he's getting more alert now, he always wants to run to the front door now when he hears noises in the staircase hallway, but I usually stop him in tracks because I don't want him to be one of those reactive dogs who bark their lungs out everytime they hear something 'suposely suspicious', at least not when it's just mere footsteps or my neighbour opening/closing his door.

I had a similar experience with Jasper - as you say, it's lucky to have a dog with you during those random / creepy situations!

Holy Siddharta Gautuama! :o Now THAT is scary... EXTREMELY scary.
Albeit disgusting! I'd probably call the cops on him for you if I was there and witnessed this! You're lucky Monobi caught him and made you react. Why the hell do some people even do this kind of pointless stuff?!

He never plays outside, but he loves to play catch inside with his toys, he's ruinied that wooden floor with his claws quite efficiently. Wonder what my landlord will think of pets if he ever gets to see that lol. Guess he didn't think that dog claws could do that to the floor (but neither did I)

Well well, would you look at that, I surely haven't posted in here for a while!
Time to make an update :v

Monobi's doing great, and when I look at the picture at the thread beginning all I can think is "oh my god, he used to look so shaggy and terrible!"

Here are some photos from last year autumn to now
I was working as a dog walker for 2-3 months, and the other dogs in the photos belong to clients :)

I've noticed that his tail became very brushy, GSD-like :)
I think he just looks awesome now! Sometimes people tell me he resembles a fox/jackal somewhat, which makes me kinda proud. I think he's just cool looking with his "do as they please" ears and his facial markings <3

He looks great - he sure has come a long way from how he looked when you first got him! :D

It's so-so, at home he's got very high spirits and can be pretty perky at times :B
Outside he can still be skittish or nervous, mostly when other dogs approach or when we walk in the city. But I know it'll get better.
When I throw the ball for him, he mostly forgets anything around him (unless I throw the ball too far)
He is unfortunatelly also very afraid of firecrackers since silvester :/ I thought about buying a dog CD with sounds on it to work against that, because when I was at my mum's, he did run away (but luckily home to my mum... it was evening and very dark, I couldn't see him at all and last time I spotted him in the darkness, he was running towards the woods, so I went looking for him there. IT WAS SCARY. There are boars around and I didn't wanted to run into any, augh!)
He wanted to run back home when we were in the park and he heard a firecracker also, but luckily he return upon me calling him, phew! My mum lives on the countryside in a village, not so much traffic at all, but Berlin is a whole different thing...!

But yeah he's pretty healthy now, just still so thin!
I stopped feeding wet food and started feeding BARF. I did feed it for a while when I was doing the dog-walker job, but this stuff smelled so bad and I just didn't want to deal with it. Now I deal with it anyway because it's the only thing that seemingly can put some weight onto him. It's also good to know what I'm exactly feeding my dog and that it's really good for him.

I know there is some sighthound in him and he'll never be broad or anything, but his hipbones stick out so much and so do his ribs, even though I did feed him plenty (and yeah he is dewormed, just... he doesn't gain anything)

I've been feeding BARF for a week now, and a bit more than he should get at his weight, and he's finally gaining some more muscle and everything, so I'll continue to feed it (especially since it's also good for my wallet, I can get it pretty cheap around here)

I'm just curious, could the thin belly be based on him having a speedy metabolism? From my understanding, some dogs have faster metabolism than others much like humans.

Could be, although he's not one of those high-energy dogs. He likes action, but when I'm at work, he idles in his dogbed under the table all day long without any trouble. From my understanding, people and dogs with a fast metabolism are usally full of energy.

Tatzel,

THANK YOU. I"ll admit that I haven't quite gotten up the courage to attempt a rescue dog (have done dozens of rescue reptiles, but ....)

Rescues are most def. worth it! I wouldn't even say that you have to put more work into them compared to getting a puppy from a breeder. Some things can take them a little longer though, like getting over their fear of different things.

Here are a few spring related pictures!

He looks good. Is his coat getting thicker or is it just the camera angle/lighting?

He certainly got a bit plushier here and there! Like on his tail and his neck. Overall, his cat is not very thick though and his hair is short to medium in lengh.

He is, now :D
When I look back on the first pitcures I posted of him I can't help but think "wow, he was pretty ugly with all those bald spots and the missing fur!" but he's super pretty and cute now imo :3
