For the Videogamers: Sega vs. Nintendo

Post by Tiantai » Sun Aug 19, 2012 4:19 pm

While the rivalry between Sega and Nintendo, two of the most popular video game manufacturer companies, has subsided ages ago, the little war they had towards each other is still spoken of today in the video gaming communities. In these two video, video gaming satirist James Duncan Rolfe (also known as the Angry Video Game Nerd) makes comparison between two of the top selling consoles, one from each system, at the time - that being the SNES and Sega Genesis. The videos also contain clips from his childhood when the Sega Genesis was a big hit at the time and Rolfe, being a devoted Nintendo fan, got mad at those commercials slagging his favourite console and decided to show off to the best of his childhood knowledge of what the SNES can do and what Nintendo had to offer for its fans.

Today, Sega has ended with making consoles after the Dreamcast system and are now selling videogames on Nintendo, Sony Playstation, and Microsoft X-Box company console systems, forming a neutral relationship with the three overall. While Sega is no longer a rival to any of the latter three, the video gaming communities are still full of debates amongst different video gamers. As different gamers have different taste of style, one will always find gamers debating on which system they enjoy better whether it is the Nintendo Wii or the X-box 360 or PS3. As such, I started this topic to see how many videogamers are on this forum and would like to know who's a Nintendo, Sega, Sony, or Microsoft fan :D

Here's the videos:

I'm also a HARDCORE Nintendo fan :D but I do own a Sega Genesis and a few Microsoft PC games ;)

I'm interested in knowing what video games that some of you enjoy the most :)

My favourite games are Super Mario World (SNES), Donkey Kong Country (all three on the SNES), the Pocket Monster games (all handhelds), Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), Twilight Princess (Gamecube and Wii), Earth Bound (SNES), Kirby's Dreamland I and II (Gameboy), Kirby's Dreamland 3 (SNES), Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii), Final Fight (SNES), Super Castlevania 4 (SNES), Punch Out (SNES), Contra (NES), TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES), Pikmin (both 1 and 2 on Gamecube), the Super Smash series, Spider-man Shattered Dimensions (Wii), Edge of Time (Wii), Metal Gear Solid (PSP), and the Fire Emblem series (NES, Gameboy Colour, Gameboy Advance, and DS). :D Most of my top favourites are the RPG but I also enjoy the Beat Them Up games next to those.

Sega! I grew up being the Tails to my brother's Sonic! But now I'm more of an occasional RPGer. Final Fantasy games (8 and 10 are my favourites), Lost Odyssey, The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall and Grim Fandango.

I had Nintendo products until the PS2, and played on that until I built my first computer. Now I mostly play MMOs and FPSs. :)

I grew up on Sonic's (as well as Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Shinobi but to name a few). My aunty/family friend had a game boy with Mario which i played a lot...
As for faves now, the games i like are spread out over a few consoles... Annoying really considering how much it would be to buy them all...
About 10 yr ago (wow that makes me feel old :( ) i acquired a nintendo 64 console with goldeneye (odd job is the best cuz no one can shoot you up close  ) and went through all the old mario's but sonic remains my fave :D

I loved Streets of Rage! I played it a little while ago when my brother downloaded an emulator. Very nostalgic and very cool!

I see, I like Twilight Princess wayyyyyyyy better than Skyward Sword tbh. The theme is a lot darker and the controls are easier as oppose to the latter in which I had to purchase a Motion-Plus even after having owned the game for a week. And I still consider Skyward Sword a little bit boring, dunno, maybe it's the kiddish graphics or something

You mean we are too old???  :o No more Zelda? No more Mario? Pikmin? Harry Potter?
I hoped I had at least still a couple of years left to extend my everlasting youth
When did we cross the line? At 30? 40?

Well... guess I have to save them all for my son now. Just have to be sure they are still all in good order now and then

Oh, Still havent completely finished Skyword sword.
The only zelda I found hard to keep focussed and motivated with was Windmaker

 Your are funny Karen, when are we too old for video games? And I agree, the Windwaker was the hardest and the most repetitive Legend of Zelda game to me especially at the part where we had to gather pieces of the Triforce shard x__x and that took forever!

I know it's going to sound lame and might offend many other Zelda fans but I actually didn't like that game to begin with because of the cel-shaded graphics and the way they made Link look like a dork. Having seen the Super Smash Brothers Melee version of Link and Younglink as well as the Soul Calibur II version I felt that they kind of went off but luckily the Twilight Princess as well as the Link's Crossbow Training spinoff made up for that. The only one part I like in the Windwaker was when Ganondorf got stabbed in the forehead  but other than that I like to pretend that the Windwaker and it's two sequels (Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit Track) and the Phillips CDi games do not exist.

Think I just have to agree with you there.... I didnt like the graphics either. And got really tired of sailing around all the time, collecting treasure chests.

We will keep playing games untill we get old and grey and Senan ( our son) tells us to take a hike

You mean this?
What I find awesome about it is the fact that you can actually plug the Sega Genesis controller onto it. Something the Sega fans back then often tried to hold on to when arguing with Nintendo fans. "I can play on the Atari 2600 with my Genesis controller!"

When I was a kid my uncle had both, the Sega Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo, one of my cousins had a Super Nintendo also, so I got to play with both consoles as well as the GameBoy and the GameGear - wasn't allowed to own one myself though until much later lol.

I love the Sonic games (namely Sonic & Tails as well as Sonic and Knuckles) as well as the Ecco the Dolphin games (even though they were hard!), but the Snes wins my heart with Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Super Mario World and Seiken Densetsu 3, as well as many, many many other great games.

I still play mostly Snes nowadays, although I do have a Nintendo DS as well as a PS 2 and 3.
On the PS3, I love to play Assassin's Creed. PS2 is mostly for games like Final Fantasy (10 is my favourite), Silent Hill 2-4 and Okami.

Bad case of motion sickness I guess.

Then you should never play or watch someone playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
The effects they're using when the protagonist gets crazy are quite insane! (pun intended)
They even made me go cross-eyed even though my brain can cope well with video games.

It's a super scary game, too :o

Haha, are you sure about that? I can't play scary games with some of my friends because they'll freak out while I'm playing and thus in return, make me feel even more tensed than when I play alone!
Amnesia is totally worth playing though, it's so scary! Penumbra: Black Plague was made by Frictional Games also, uses the same engine and all and is also pretty damn scary (also has a rather epic story).

What about Silent Hill, ever played those games?

I have a love/hate relationship with scary games. Being under so much tension from the game is nerve-wrecking, but somehow I really seem to dig that
