Population Genetics course

Post by Hawthorne » Fri Jan 03, 2014 7:06 pm

I must be totally nuts to voluntarily sign up for an 8 week class on genetics. I think that what they have done with the Chinook database is directly applicable to the Tamaskan breed so I signed up. There are many other courses available, too.

I have had genetics college courses in the past so I hope something will be familiar...

bark as if no one can hear you

lick like there's no end to kissing
sleep on a sofa nearby
jump like the sky is the limit
sit by the fire with friends
stay with the ones who love you
run like the road never ends

I remember going over population genetics in a genetics class I took in college, but that's about as far as the memory goes. Lots of math.

Yep. I had a regular Genetics class, then I also had Organic Evolution (grad level). Organic Evolution was absolutely fascinating. I kept both text books. :P I just have so many general questions about how this is all applied to not only dog breeding, but also to a breed in development. But yes, lots of algebra. I'm good with math up to calculus. That's where I got lost (plus had a horrible teacher for calc).

This is so cool! :D

I was good with Calculus while I was in school, but I don't remember any of it now. Was always a bigger fan of biology than math. The whole population genetics thing is interesting though. Maybe I should do some brushing up...

I usually understood the theory portion of genetics but never was good with the math stuff. Took me months to understand mitochondrial haplotypes, but I was willing the go beyond my microbiology notes on those like crazy so that I could apply those knowledge to my future captive Canis lupus irremotus x Canis latrans incolatus hybridization project. But the more I learn about the various genetic topics, the more I am incline to dig further and further.

Awesome: the instructor will also be using the Tamaskan database in class as well. Hoorah!
