When are you expecting pups from this 2014 breeding? What are plans for another breeding after this one?

If all goes as planned Freyja will be bred sometime in March. That puts puppies born sometime in May, and maybe ready to go home sometime in July. This will probably be Freyja's last litter unless our reproductive vet can give her the all clear AND she has a natural birth. If she has another c-section, she must be spayed.
After this, we hope to breed Raven in the Fall. It will be her first litter and my husband will be off of work for the puppies (ideal!). We are hoping to use Zephyr for Raven's first litter.

Freyja went into heat this past Friday so we are making plans for her vet checkup and travel plans. I will be driving her to MN--another big adventure. I can't wait to photograph these two standing next to one another <3

Freyja is a great traveller. This will be our third, but longest, road trip together. The first male was 15 hours away, the second male was 17 hours away, and now the third male for this litter is 22 hours away. LOL I hope I'm not starting a trend. I don't want to have to keep going further and further away each time...

I think you already have. I wonder if Raven will go even further when it is her turn

We had two successful pairings between Arrow and Freyja this week! If all goes as planned, we should see puppies on or about May 25th. We will be keeping a girl so I can't wait!!! We already have a name picked out for her :)

A very special thanks to Points Unknown http://www.points-unknown.com for hosting us and for being so accommodating for this process.

Out of curiosity will Arrow be used again for future breedings?

More than likely this will be her last litter, yes. I will follow our canine reproductive specialists recommendations regarding her condition. In most dog breeding circles, 3 litters is plenty. But Freyja certainly is a great mother, bounces back right away, and produces very nice pups. I will do what is best for her health. Additionally, I am out of options for studs here in North America so we would have to do frozen overseas. not only is that a huge planning commitment but it is a huge financial investment as well. I don't know if we're ready to do that.
Tiantai wrote:Out of curiosity will Arrow be used again for future breedings?
It depends on how this litter turns out. Right now, Arrow would be the only suitable stud for my second girl, Raven, in all of North America so I am planning on breeding Raven to Arrow--perhaps as early as October but probably not until next spring. Our family life has thrown a little wrench into our plans :D

I hate to use an outcross on Raven for her first litter but I just won't do AI for her first litter, I think it's foolish and per above, I'm not quite ready to make that financial commitment. (I would want to see the stud in person prior to forking over all the money to ship sperm, etc. = $$$) Raven needs to have her first litter in her third year, in my opinion. The longer one waits to do the first breeding the higher the risk of pyometra with each subsequent heat. So it's important for her, too. That way, she would be retired by about age 5 like her mother.

Have you thought about Zeus (Conchur Lykaon)?

Wolfsbane wrote:Have you thought about Zeus (Conchur Lykaon)?
Zeus lives in California and I live on the East coast. It would be a 5 day drive one way to get to him. I will not put my girl on a plane. So that leaves AI. Also, I would want to see what he produces first with the risk for cryptorchidism in his background.
Booma wrote:Is pika an option?
He isn't health tested yet. So I wouldn't count on him at this point. I'd have to look at his pedigree and dig a little deeper.
