Hello from Melbourne

Post by Flea » Thu Sep 22, 2011 3:29 am

Hi from Melbourne, Australia.

We have put a deposit down on a Tamaskan puppy just last week. So we should be one of the first to bring a Tamaskan puppy in Australia. Very excited about it and really cant wait.

But the Australian government has just decided that from 1st jan 2012 it is going to tighten the rules animal import from the UK (im guessing due to the fact that the UK is making it easier to import animals from other counrties). This is going to make it soooo much harder for anyone in Australia to bring a Tamaskan in to the country. If what I have read is correct then a puppy will be 10-11 months old before it gets to the person in Australia.

Thoughts.......?

Welcome :D
You should talk to Lynn about the importing, I hope they won't make it even harder for you! It would be so nice to have some Tamaskan over in Australia.

Yes he has been talking to me and sadly it may well be true. We in UK have had to put up with this law for as long as I can remember. Any dogs we have imported have had to be at least 10 months old due to having their rabies shots first at 12 weeks, have a blood test done one month later and then we wait the six months to the day before they can enter UK. Now as from 1st Jan 2012 we only have to have the rabies shot wait 21 days and dogs can come and go.

Welcome to the forum, and if you are determined to have a Tamaskan you will surely have one. I say that because I waited almost a year after I decided to have a Tamaskan. Its all once luck that plays a part in their life somewhere.

Hello from the USA!

Can you post the language of the new AU restrictions on importing dogs? There must be some loop holes!

I have cut and pasted this out of a document sent to me by a company here that specialises in pet transportation. The official wording is at http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs/co ... nfo-pack-4. Doubt there are any loop holes. The Australian government are super strict on quarantine. Just really bad timing on my part.

Importing pets into Australia from a Category 4 country

When bringing a pet from the Category 4 country there is a minimum quarantine period of 30 days. The critical factor that determines when your pet can come into the country and how much quarantine your pet will have to complete on entry into Australia is the date the blood is taken for the RNATT test (the rabies antibody test).

An outline of the requirements including the timing of the RNATT test is as follows:

• Rabies vaccinations:

Preferably within 1 year of beginning the import process. Having the rabies vaccination done within 1 year of beginning the import process should assist the anti body count required when doing the RNATT test (see below) – you should consult your vet for further advice.

• Ensuring your pet has a microchip

• Vaccinations

Vaccinations must be done more than 14 days prior but within 1 year of the pet coming to Australia.

• RNATT Blood test (Rabies antibody blood test)

The RNATT blood test needs to be conducted by a Government approved vet.

This test must be done a minimum of 4 weeks after the rabies vaccination but preferably less than 1 year after the vaccination date.

Your pet must register a rabies antibody count of more than 0.5IU/ml

If your pet successfully records this count or higher the following applies –

To be eligible for the minimum quarantine period of 30 days your pet must wait a period of 150 days (5 months) prior to entering Australia. Your pet however can enter Australia sooner.

The soonest a pet can enter Australia is 60 days after the RNATT test. If the pet was to enter Australia at this point they would need to spend a period of 120 days in quarantine.

Your pet of course can enter any time after the 60 days after the RNATT test and before the 150 days but would need to spend the balance of extra time in quarantine.

Please see table below.

Time from when blood was drawn
for the RNATT prior to arrival in Australia Minimum quarantine period
in Australia
150 days or more prior to arrival in Australia 30 days
135 days prior to arrival in Australia 45 days
120 days prior to arrival in Australia 60 days
90 days prior to arrival in Australia 90days
60 days prior to arrival in Australia 120 days

If you’re pet fails to register the required count it will need to have another rabies vaccination and then be followed up with another RNATT test at least 4 weeks later.

I don't think there are any litters right now or older pups available?

Great to hear there will be some in Australia!
I'd love to own one. I'm not sure I can afford to import just yet, but You might end up with an enthusiast on your doorstep wanting pats
It's a shame it's so hard to import here ( but sooo good that we don't have any nasties like rabies! )
I know a girl who just imported a Samoyed from Norway and boy did she have a hell of a time
