Hello

Post by Lakota2012 » Wed Jul 11, 2012 1:46 am

Hello everyone!
My name is Joy. I live in Alabama. I recently adopted a puppy from a "breeder" who "accidently" had puppies. When we got Lakota we were told that he is a high content wolf dog. He is supposed to be Arctic/Timber/Alaskan Malamute. I have my doubts about this tho. He looks like all the pics i have seen of the Tamaskan. Im starting to wonder if he is possibly a tamaskan or mixed with tamaskan. Is there any way for me to find out?

Hi Lakota. Why not start with posting a couple of photos of your dog. If a lot of people think it could be a tam, or a tam cross, then you could send off a cheek swab to the company that does the DNA tests for tams and it may come back with matching relatives. Where did you get your dog?

I will post some pics hopefully tomorrow. Lakota came from a backyard breeder. The lady said the puppies were an accident. She said that Lakota had had little to no human interaction. He was 10 weeks old when we rescued him. He was terrified of us at first. But he came around quick. Hes 17 weeks old now and doing great. I work at a vet hospital and take him to work with me everyday. He loves playing with all the other dogs in daycare. He is still shy of some people and we are working on socializing him. Where do you get the dna test for tamaskans? I did do a dna test on him but it doesnt test for tamaskans.

http://www.dog-dna.com/about/laboratory.php
This is the company that the tdr use. Before dogs are mated they must be DNA profiled. Maybe since your dogs "breeder" believed it to be a wolfdog, it's possible that she got her dog from RPK (right puppy kennel), who is a puppy farmer who breeds "American tamaskan" (previously called tamaskan wolfdogs). If your dog is from an RPK line, I'm not sure if anything would come up from a DNA profile. I'm not sure how far back In the dogs line it can look, and you might just be wasting your money. There are other, smarter people on the forum that may know though.

Welcome aboard the Tamaskan community Joy.

Hmm, I see that you rescued a dog from a puppy miller and that the miller told you that she's a wolfdog even though she may more likely just be another one of those common mutts being misrepresented according to how you described her. I will not jump to conclusion about the dog being an RPK line just yet. There are in fact many Husky-mixes in various shelters all over the world looking very Tamaskan-like and your dog might just be one of those mutts. Don't take my word for it though, I could be wrong! However, SOME of the mutts from the many shelters ARE related to some RPK dogs and we've had several rescued before including a female name Serenity. You can learn more about the puppy miller in the Scams and Warning section of the forum and you might also like to look into the International Tamaskan Rescue section as well. You can also share more about your dog in the Other Pets section so everyone can learn more about your companion ;)

Im pretty sure he is just a mixed breed. His dna test came back Malamute/German Shepherd/Siberian Husky. But the test we use at work doesnt test for rare breeds. So who knows. Either way he is loved and taken care of now. Doesnt matter to me if hes purebred or just another mutt.

The tam does have those three breeds in its background. Also, it's not a recognised breed, so the kind of test you used would not show "tamaskan" even for pure dogs.
@ Lucas. I did not say her dog was from RPK lines, I said it was a possibility.
@ Lakota. If you have a smart phone, there is an app you can download (touch bb) and you can upload photos from your phone.

I am using my smart phone. Ill look for the app. The test i used also doesnt test for wolf dogs either. Im almost positive hes not wolf dog. He is too well behaved. From what i read about wolf dogs they are stubborn and hard to train. Lakota is very smart and willing to learn. He knows all the basic commands except "come" and im working on that.

Welcome to the forum, Joy. Your puppy is lucky to have you to look after him!

I think a lot of us here got hooked after reading about Tamaskans as well. They sure are great dogs, even if they have their little challenges

Lol im always up for a challange. Most of my pets have been rescues that had/have issues. Lakota being my most recent with his lack of socialization and poor diet. Both of which are now much better. Amazing what good food and training will do for a dog:)

You said it! Can you imagine what a relief it is for them to get training and break down the communication barrier? I think it must provide a better sense of security for the dog. :D Kudos!

There was a breeder in Alabama: Elk River. However I don't know their current status. Tragedy struck their pack and I don't know if anyone has heard from them since.

Well im just gonna go with malamute mix then. We were told he was high content wolf dog when we rescued him. Ive talked with some wolf dog owners and they say hes not. Dna test says Malamute mixed with husky and german shepherd. But the dna test doesnt test for wolf dogs or Tamaskans.

He reminds me a bit of Saxon Musala (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2870) and Blustag Golden Sunset (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3040).
