Hello from the Washington DC area!

Post by MelVal » Mon Mar 03, 2014 6:41 am

Hello!

I came across the Tamaskan breed recently. I currently have a Siberian Husky and am interested in adding a Tamaskan to the family sometime this year, ideally in the November- December timeframe. I love the arctic breeds and am especially attracted to this breed for it's recall ability!

Thanks,

Melyna

Welcome to The forum. Be aware not all tams are capable of recall.

Lol my Tam has recall...so long as there are no distractions and provided he actually wants to come back. Lots of Tamaskans have 0 recall...it's not all about training :P

Gorgeous husky! Welcome to the forum :)
My Tams all have decent recall and can be off-leash without any issues (though they went through a phase of selective hearing during puberty...) ;)

Thanks for the welcome. I did get a chance to read through the "recall" post section. I understand that not all tamaskans are capable of recall, but there seems to be more hope than with other arctic breeds! When selecting a puppy, would you say that the more beta personalities have a higher likelihood of working towards a strong recall?

Wylie was a very very dominant pup (singleton litter) when I got him. When I asked him to sit he'd yell at me and walk away. His recall was really good until he hit 5 months old and realized he didn't really have to listen and man do those bunnies look tasty. My lab who is very much a beta has great recall unless there are deer. So I'd say that alpha/beta mindset doesn't have too much of an impact that I've seen, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Welcome!

Having a people oriented dog might help with recall. Our Tam will take or leave most other animals but I have yet to see a person he doesn't want to meet and get attention from. He has close to perfect recall and will stop mid-animalchase if you call him. The breed seems to fall on both ends of the spectrum.

Hello and Welcome! I live in Frederick, MD, and my boy is 2 yrs now. I can't say if he has good recall or not as I've never taken the chance :? . I imagine he'd do okay until, as others have said, he sees a deer, rabbit, squirrel, human, etc, then he'd be gone until he was good and ready to come back.
