Heyya From Central Illinois, USA!

Post by Aushra » Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:29 pm

Greetings!! I am currently doing research on Wolfdog breeds, having relocated to a state where Wolfdogs are banned. We have one, but he's "Shepherdy" enough to pass as just a regular mix. ;)
We are not currently looking to add to our pack, but I figure that the sooner I start, the more information I gather, the better we will be prepared to give the right home to the dog that fits our family. So in my research, I've come across the Tamaskan & Norhtern Inuit breeds. I'd truly love to know why y'all chose the Tamaskan, was it just the Tamaskan you already went for, or did you consider others, ya know, all that good stuff.
Thank you in aadvance for your time & sharing!!

Welcome to the forum.
The people who started the Tamaskan had Northen Inuit and Utonagan before and they moved over to Tamaskan because of the many health issues in the breed and also because of the patchy coats, long hair and soft ears which they believed were not wolfy looking. Northern Inuit also allow blue eyes, which Tamaskan people believe makes the dogs look more like huskies.
Nowadays some breeders have bucked up their ideas and do the majority of health testing, but only some clubs do this so you really have to watch out, the coats and ears are still common though.
Personally I think the Tamaskan are more consistant and wolfy looking, but I am biased

Welcome to the forum! :D

I picked the Tamaskan as (in my opinion) it is the most "wolfy looking" of all the other breeds. ;)

Welcome! :D

The Tamaskan are very consistent in type, coat, colour etc and do look very wolfy. They are not a mix of coat colours and diff eye colours and coat lengths like the other breeds are. Also All Tamaskan from the beginning have been health tested and DNA profiled unlike the other breeds. Some are testing now but only just now and haven't been since the beginning of the breed. All the foundation Tamaskan were all tested and DNA profiled as the breed started.

Yes the Tamaskan really led the way with DNA testing and we can prove parentage right back to the beginning of the breed, something the other breeds are still not doing.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
I chose the Tamaskan because of how wolfy they looked and the fact that they are still a new breed which means for a fresher gene pool, healthier dogs.

Thanks MUCH to everyone that's responded!! I appreciate knowing about the inconsistancies(sp?) with the NI's. None of this is mentioned anywhere in the NI information I've looked up so far.
So let me ask you this, or is this something that's mentioned already and I've just not gotten to it yet? Are they very athletic dogs? I'd love to get into some urban mushing eventually, already have the scooter picked out. And would y'all happen to know of any Tamaskan owners in Illinois? I'd LOVE to be able to meet one. Thank you so much!!

LOL, nope not from the South, just (as my husband puts it) "rednecktified". The town we live in is surrounded by farms & most everyone here hunts, so.....I swear I've never seen so much cammo! hehe
And I just found the threads about their capabilities. Guys, I wanna get one NOW!!!!! They sound like such an amazing dog!! I didn't think that I'd want anything other than a Wolfdog, but I couldn't jeopardize something happening & having A WD taken away ya know? So Tamaskans seem like, as long as I get a pup & socialize them with our menagerie & children, we actually just have one but friends come over, the perfect dog!

hehe neato :)

Of all the "wolfdog breeds" Tamaskans are most closely related to Huskies so, as an Arctic Breed, they love to pull. You can work them in a harness, pulling bikes, scooters or sleds, and they can also carry backpacks. They are quite active and enjoy long hikes, but they aren't hyperactive like Siberian Huskies: they don't NEED to work.

Anyway, just wondering: what's the law in Illinois about "wolf lookalike" dogs? You say that you have a wolfdog "but he's "Shepherdy" enough to pass as just a regular mix" but what about dogs that really really LOOK like wolves.

Even with a DNA profile and pedigree, proving ancestry as a legitimate Tamaskan Dog, some states are very strict when it comes to dogs that look too much like a wolf... especially as there is not yet a DNA test that differentiates between wolfdog and regular dog.

Welcome. I prefer the consistency of the Tamaskan look and I think they are the most wolfy looking.
And of course we have the best forum! :D

Wolf-dogs that are heavy on the wolf... these animals are best left to the experts. Even if the wolf-dog is mostly dog, they can (in our limited experience) still have wolf inclinations: often too unpredictable and never very sociable.

One of the reasons that Terri (ElkRiver) and I are so into the Tamaskan is because it is our hope that we will be able to introduce this dog to those like yourself, that are looking at the Wolf-dog as a pet. We hope that having Tamaskans in our part of the country will help to make a dent in the numbers of wolf hybrids that are put down or are abandoned, to later be shot, run over or poisoned.

Hi Welcome,

I picked the Tamaskan after seeing a Northern Inuit, but some quick research showed them not to be suitable with young children as they are bouncy and not that trainable. The Tamaskan looks more wolfy and is more trainable from what I have read and seen. I am on the waiting list for our first Tamaskan and can not wait. Once you have met one you will want one.

Good question! But I've not found anything regarding bans on look a likes. Will have to delve deeper. What was interesting this weekend, I had 2 people ask what Mason was mixed with & I said that being a rescue, we're really not sure. They both said, "I see wolf in him" and one woman stated that a dog she had years ago could pass for Mason's sibling & he was a Wolfdog. I'm still learning about phenotyping & am definitley NOT an expert but if you could have met Mason's GORGEOUS mother, OY! was she something to behold and definitley a WD.
I've actually run in to a number of people since moving here who have had or know someone who has a WD here in Illinois & are completely unaware of the law. Being a network volunteer for a Wolfdog rescue, I made a point of finding out what the laws here were. THO, we have met a number of police men & they haven't said a darn thing, but would that even be their job to know this?
Anyway, I'll look into the law more.

And to the rest, thank you all for the warm welcome!! :)
Racing, I would SO love to visit. thank you!!! My dad is in Chicago & I visit him whenever I can. I believe I'm actually FB friends with a couple folks on this list? And I'd like to thank you for accepting my friendship.
Oh, let me ask y'all this, especially the breeders - How do you pick a puppy from a litter sight unseen/how do you know which family would be a good fit for your pups?
Thank you all!!

There are currently 3 Tams in the Madison, WI area if you want to meet some...hopefully 4 this winter :D

We have found the Tams to be very social and athletic.
