ANCD puppy Yarrow

Post by Kootenaywolf » Fri Apr 06, 2012 5:27 am

Yesterday I brought home my Alaskan Noble Companion Dog, Yarrow. He's the sweetest little guy! Here are some photos taken over the past two days.

What a lovely boy! I like the ANCD very much. Why did you chose the ANCD? I hope you keep us updated, I would like to follow how he develops! And I'm very curious, how is his character? The stories I read on internet are almost to good to be true, are they really that easy? I hope I don't annoy you with my questions, I've never met them in real life. ;)

Lets see! I chose the ANCD after many, many years of research. I finally chose this breed because it was pretty much an exact fit for to what I was looking for. I love the look of these dogs and they are bred to be working dogs, super biddable and trainable. I want to do a lot of training with my pup so this was very important to me! On top of that, I've always been super partial to the black-phase look so that is just a bonus :) Ann does extensive temperament testing to determine the best matches and I cannot believe the bite inhibition on this little guy! She puts in a lot of work and it shows. He doesn't use teeth on human skin, but just gives kisses instead.

As to his temperament, I'm beyond impressed so far. Of course he is just a baby still, but he has been amazing so far. He is very well adjusted, well socialized, friendly, easy going. He has bonded strongly to me and sticks to me like glue, he follows me everywhere. He's very attentive and has excellent recall already. He's well on his way to being housetrained, of course I am always watching him but he knows to go right away when we get outside so I think it will be a breeze.

I will definitely keep you guys updated. I don't mind questions at all, so ask away!

Dallas - his parents are Cola and Cinnabar!

He's cute :)
How old is he?
Also, how many generations are there on his pedigree?
I'm curious to know more about his great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents if you can provide some more info :)

His father Cinnabar is an outcross, Ann didn't breed him. On his mother's side, Cinder and Tundra in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziSzWOgZA9A - are his great-great-grandparents, and Luna is his great-grandma. Cinder/Tundra son and Luna produced grandfather Apollo who is the white dog weaving on this page http://alaskannoblecd.weebly.com/breed-standard.html and his grandmother is Xena - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQdrqzv- ... ature=plcp

Oh I am really interested in following this boy!

I have been looking a bit into the breed as well and so far I like it a LOT!
I really do hope you keep us updated!

Is he a phaser or is he "just" black?
I know there are both of those in her litters? :)

I'm not sure if he will phase or not. Ann said it's hard to tell when they are young. My guess would be that he won't phase as his mom didn't at all, but who knows! I'm curious about that too ;)

Ann told me the same thing... Even if they are born phased there is no gaurentee they will stay that way either.

He should get pretty tall, probably over 28 inches as his mom is that tall and dad a bit taller. He'll be under 100lbs, more tall and lanky than heavy.

Here are some photos from today. His ear went up today! It's my birthday, too, so I guess that was his present :D

Thanks everyone. He's a lovebug, I'm sure enjoying him! I am getting a DSLR soon (within a week I hope, it's in the mail) so soon the pictures should be nicer! I can't wait! I'll be sure to post lots of updates (I'm a photo freak so as long as people like seeing them, I love to post them!)

I think the two of them make a nice pair, elegant Collie and wolfy boy :) I can't wait to go hiking in the alpine this summer and take epic shots.

Are you thinking of getting a ANCD in the near(ish) future? Which pair would you choose a pup from?

I've been stalking pictures of ANCDs in the past couple weeks...and yes, I think I want one. Though, I'm not familiar with the current breeding pairs as I haven't had the courage to email Ann yet. lol!

I think you can actually find quite a few people in here interested in getting and ANCD at some point already.. (myself included - if they are indeed all that trainable as told, which is really why I am very interested in how this one will evolve, I would love to get one then)

Awesome, very cool, it would be great to see some more ANCD owners around! I'll definitely keep you all updated on Yarrow's progress. I know it is hard to judge at this age, but he's very quick to learn so far. He also has excellent food and toy drive so that makes training easy! He has natural retrieve which I hear can be rare in this sort of breed, and it's indicative of willingness to work with people. He really has excellent recall already, and sit/down/stand/drop it/beginnings of roll over. We really just started working on stuff so I'm quite impressed with how quickly he gets it.

I'm also very pleased with his look so far! I do hope his eyes lighten up, but I've noticed with some of the ANCDs it can take a while for their eyes to get light. His won't be greenish/pale yellow like Xena, but I hope they get as light as Cola's.

A Nikon D5100! So excited! We had a D60 last year for about 3 months and then my boyfriend fell in the ocean with it :? It actually still sort of worked afterward, but it would only recognize manual focus lenses. I missed having a nice camera around soooo much and then we found a really good deal on the D5100...so...it's on it's way! Even though we so can't afford it right now

That's awful!! I know exactly how you feel, except the D300 is a waaaaay nicer (and more expensive) camera than the D60. Would you consider getting a lower level one or do you want to stick to a professional one? I found (factory) refurbished ones on ebay to be a nice markdown.

I want to get another D300 but it will be a few years cause I have a few things higher on my list then replacing it. Tamaskan #2, Vehicle, and hopefully a ANCD.

That is some shopping list, but you are going to need a camera to take lots of lovely photos of your family when you get them so you can post on here

I have to ask. What is the difference between a black and a phaser? What exactly is a phaser?
A "phaser" would be a black that phases, like black phase wolves do. The ANCDs don't phase as much as wolves but some have a bit of phasing, like Pepsi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDBRKOHpZYE (the mother in the video). I think it's very pretty! Otherwise he would stay more solid black like grandmother Xena - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQdrqzv- ... ature=plcp

I think both look lovely so I'm happy either way :)

I can't wait to get my camera and take some more photos, he has grown SO much since these last ones!

Oh. Ok. So the phasers turn a dark-silver color kind of like the color of a silver fox while the blacks just stay solid black then?

Yeah, phasing is like the lighter coloured undercoat showing through. The "solid" blacks also have a little variation in their coat of course, but less so. I don't think I'll know whether Yarrow will phase til he's quite a bit older.

I think Phasing is shown by the difference in the coat, the light undercoat and the dark overcoat whereas a black dog is all black all the way through like the black GSD
