Sølve - Bridge of Sighs (Nov 1st 2010 - May 17th 2013)

Post by Nino » Thu Jun 06, 2013 1:46 pm

Hello All

I am sorry to announce this, which has taken me a few weeks to even get to the point where I can even write this mail and announce that we have had to put Sølve (Blustag Bridge of Sighs) to sleep.

It was a hard decision to make and anyone who know me personally would know this.

As some of you might have known Sølve were scored with really poor hips, so far in the breed in the high end and which indicated severe Hip Dysplasia.
For the first couple of years, there were nothing to see of pain and I could not believe that these were so bad, but then the pains started and this did not only affect her psychically but also mentally.

This meant that along with moving this January Sølve had been more and more stressed out, more and more scared and in increasing pains. Had it only been the pains it would have been easier to live with, as controlling pains is not as bad, but she could never fully rest or be relaxed unless everything was totally right, which meant that I was home 24/7, my partner was home and there was nothing else going on in the house. This caused me personal exclusion and in the end a great deal of loneliness where I for days could only see my partner and my partner who studies could not be home all the time.
At times when we both had to leave Sølve (which ended up being only a few times doing the last 3-4 months) she would (as a new thing which never done before) be howling, pacing and barking until we came home again, and even then she would not be totally without stress. This also cause her not to put on enough weight or not to be able to keep it, and in the last few months she lost a few kilos which as a result made her look sickly thin.

This was all things that we were talking with the vet about, we tried out different medication, and even more alternative ones like DAP diffuser, but it was never effective.

Then the worst thing happened, and Sølve was, on a walk with my parents who we visited and she loved, attacked by a loose small terrier mix, and as a result Sølve ended up biting the other dog in defence, which she then hurt.
This was what it was (a fair dog response to defend oneself), doing that we had not initiated the attack we hoped that nothing would change for Sølve, but where she had before been good with dogs, she started to fear small ones, even the ones she had known before, and both my parents and my partner became anxious walking her should they meet another dog and would she then be so fearful she would attack?
It did end up that she when I was walking our other dog, with my partner in the house, crashed through one door and as she was trying to get through the next one to follow me (we walked the dogs not together always because of wanting them to function independently), as my partner was pulling Sølve off the second door, Sølve made a serious snap at her (luckily not hitting).

And I cannot make it clear enough that although Sølve was never good with strangers, she was NEVER aggressive and always gave room instead of being in any way aggressive, and as my Partner entered my life Sølve loved her from the first time they met, and at times I was unsure if she was actually more happy with my partner than with me.

This along with all the other stuff made a great deal of hurt in our lives, and more so in Sølve's.
Taking the decision to put her to sleep was NEVER a light one to make, and it took a long time, thinking every possible solution through. Would she be better off in another home? Were there anything else we could do to help her when medicine and training did not help? Had I failed her and was it all my fault? What would happen if it was not my partner or me who she would snap at again (if ever) and it instead was a child? Could she ever be the Sølve I had always hoped to get when I got her? All of these questions and many more was considered.
We cried a lot, both in my home and in the home of my family who cared a great deal about it.

But finally May 17th 2013 Sølve was put to sleep at the vet who she liked (which we drove 200+ km to get to, because we wanted the last trip to be a peaceful and as pleasant as possible).

It has taken me almost 3 weeks to write this announcement as it was much too hard for me to sit down and do!
I am crushed as I have lost not only my pet and my dog, but my best friend and a being that touched my soul so deeply that I tend to call her a mate of my soul and my soulmate.
The crying about the turn of event is not yet over and I am sure it will take long time for it to end.

Thank you for reading this.

Rest in Peace
Sølve

Dogs do not die,
they only gain their wings and learn to fly.
They will play again I pray,
in those green fields far away.
Past the gates of pearly white,
with other loved ones gone from our sight.
We will see them once again,
at the bridge called Rainbow's End.
With a wag of a tail and a jump in the air,
we will once again become a pair.
Don't be sad this day my friend,
just look for the bridge
called Rainbow's End.
And remember. Dogs do not die,
they gain their wings and learn to fly..........

Much strength from all of us

Line, I was very surprised to see this first thing in the morning when I logged on and have pretty much spent all day digesting this sad news. I am sorry that you and your family lost such a dear friend. While I never got the chance to meet Solve, she was definitely one of the girls I fell in love with. However, I am also happy that she's no longer in pain and fear - I have a few fantastic 4 legged friends over on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge who will keep her company (one of them was a 15wk old puppy - rambunctious boy, I might add), so I'm sure she'll love him. But do tell her to watch out for Outlaw's mama, Sophia, since she's always watching out for her baby. ;)

We'll all meet beautiful Solve again someday when the time comes....

I feel a great loss hearing this and I know neither your nor your partner wanted to do this. However Line, this is NOT the end of her - only the body. Know that Sølve has reached eternal Enlightenment and there is no doubt in my mind that she will see you again one day at the end of the bridge when it's your time too because we know how much she loves you. You will hear her voice again... :(

Nino, that's so terrible! My thoughts go out to you, I hope you'll feel better soon!
I'm sorry for your loss and Sølve's pain and suffering, and it was a real shocker to find this thread. I imagine your thoughts must be tormenting you for the hard decision you had to make, but in my opinion, I think you have chosen what you believe is in everyone's, but alsothe dog's best interesst.

If being in pain stressed her out so much and made her so nervous that she had no control over herself anymore, then I think her life quality has degraded to the point where putting her to sleep forever is doing her a favour.

I wish you all the best!

Thank you all for your sweet comments.
I miss her a lot, and things are not at all the same, although we do get out more now, which of course is nice enough.
I am also terrible afraid for the health of our current 7½ months old dog, as I cannot go through another sick dog as it is now..
(if you guys can possibly put yourself in my place)

Gosh, I didn't expect that this would happen. You probably done everything you had in your power to do for Sølve. I must have been terrible for you, your partner and your family. My thoughts are with you.
I don't know if this is in the right place, but I do have a question, did you contact a professional dogtrainer? And if so, what where his/her thoughts about it?
